The Department of Social Service of the Western Province

The Department of Social Service of the Western Province is a watchdog institution that continues to provide services for the welfare activities of the low income earner marginalized communities within the districts of Colombo, Gampaha and Kalutara. In the office of this Department, there are about 40 personnel engaged in service and the total cadre of the entire Department comprising Social Service Officers, Development Officers and Graduate Trainees attached to 40 Divisional Secretariats scattered around the Western Province and the institutions such as Mith Sevana, Seth Sevana, Meth Sevana and Sath Sevana under the purview of the Department of Social Service of the Western Province is approximately 280. The custody and the security as well as protection of the elderly and disabled community are taken care of through these institutions. Furthermore, the work involving house detention and residential rehabilitation under the Vagrancy Ordinance are also undertaken. As a whole, the Department of Social Service involves itself in providing financial services and assistance such as equipment for the low income earner marginalized communities whilst implementing projects towards the development of the social attitudes and the aspects of economy, culture, education, psychology, spirituality and capacity.
