2026.05.07/08 Two-day training program to introduce the department
A two-day training program to introduce the department was conducted at the Ministry of Health Auditorium under the guidance of Director Mrs. Samintha Gimani Perera for the Development Officers and Management Services Officers who joined the department after receiving the 2026 annual transfers. Mr. Mangala Asoka, Senior Social Services Officer at the Headquarters, acted as the Chief Training Officer.
2026/4/28 The New Year festival brought physical and mental well-being to elderly parents
An Avurudu festival was held at the Colombo District Elderly Welfare Service Center located in Polwatta, Pannipitiya for the physical and mental well-being of the elderly members. The program was held under the patronage of the Director of the Department of Social Services (w.p.) Mrs. Samintha Gimani Perera and with the participation of Mrs. Visharada Erandi Heshani as the special guest. About one hundred and fifty elderly people participated in this program.
2026/04/21 “Kantha Suwasetha” program held for mothers of Wattala education aid recipients
The first educational assistance was provided in 2026 to fatherless children in the Wattala Divisional Secretariat through the provisions of the Department of Social Services (W.P.). Simultaneously, an awareness program titled “Kantha Suwasetha” was also held for the mothers of those children with the resources of Ayurvedic doctor Padiyapperuma. The program was organized by Social Service Officer (w.p.) T.K. Gayani Deepika with the participation of the Assistant Divisional Secretary.
2026/04/10 New Year Festival at the Sath Sevana Government Development Center for Boys with Special Needs, Mirigama
The Avurudu festival, organized for the rehabilitation purposes of the children residing at the Sath Sevana Government Development Center for Boys with Special Needs, Meerigama, was held at the premises of the institution with the participation of the Meerigama Divisional Secretariat and the organization of the institution.
2026/04/08 New Year Festival at Mayura Child Guidance Center, Mathugama
The Avurudu festival, organized for the rehabilitation purposes of the special children who are clients of the Mathugama Mayura Child Guidance Center, was held under the patronage of the Director of the Department of Social Services (w.p.), Mrs. Samintha Gimani Perera, and with the participation of the Headquarters Senior Social Service Officer, Mr. Mangala Asoka, and the Kalutara District Senior Social Service Officer, Mrs. Dushmanthi Dharmasiri.
2026/04/07 Legal Clinic for Single Mothers
A legal clinic was held in the Attanagalla Divisional Secretariat Division with the resources of Attorney-at-Law K.A.I.S. Kalubowila to provide legal advice to mothers of single-parent children receiving educational assistance through the provisions of the Department of Social Services (w.p.).
2026/3/27 “Paduru Sajjaya” at Polwatte
The “Paduru Sajjya” singing program was held at the Colombo District Elderly Welfare Service Center in Polwatta, Pannipitiya as a music therapy program for the physical and mental well-being of the elderly parents. The program was held under the patronage of the Director of the Department of Social Services (w.p.), Mrs. Samintha Gimani Perera, and the training and musical orchestra were conducted by musician Sisira Marasinghe. About one hundred and fifty adults participated.
2026/03/27 Biyagama Food Production Self-Employment Training
Food production self-employment training was provided at the Kandubod Vivekarama Viharaya for the low-income elderly community of the Biyagama Divisional Secretariat through the provisions of the Department of Social Services (w.p.).
2026/03/20 Training on physical fitness and first aid for Kalutara adults
A training program on physical fitness and first aid for the elderly was conducted at the Kalutara District Elderly Welfare Service Center with the participation of seventy-five adults, with the support of the Kalutara Walkers’ Association and the resources of Public Health Service Nurse Officer H.H.D.L. Priyangika.
2026/03/04 Dhamma sermon for elderly parents in Mirigama
A melodious sermon by Venerable Wimala Thero was held at the Gampaha Elders’ Welfare Service Center in Mirigama, with the participation of over a hundred elders, seeking blessings for elderly parents.
2026/03/03. Counseling program for people with disabilities in Kelaniya
A counseling programme was conducted for persons with disabilities and their guardians in the Kelaniya Divisional Secretariat Division who are receiving assistance from the Department of Social Services (w.p.) funds. 56 beneficiaries participated in it.
2026/02/05 Independence Day of the Colombo District Elderly Welfare Service Center
As a National Independence Day celebration program and as a music therapy program for the mental well-being of the elderly, a patriotic song concert was held at the Colombo District Elderly Welfare Service Center in Pannipitiya Polwatta under the patronage of Mr. A.L. Kalukapuarachchi, Secretary, Ministry of Social Welfare, and Mrs. Samintha Gimani Perera, Director, Department of Social Services (w.p.), with the participation of over a hundred adults.
2026.01.13/14 Departmental 2026 Implementation Program being prepared
Under the guidance of the Secretary to the Ministry of Health and Social Welfare of the Western Province, Mr. A.L. Kalukapuarachchi, and the supervision of the Director of the Department of Social Services (DSS), Mrs. Samintha Gimani Perera, a special two-day program was held at the Talahena Community Center with the participation of senior social service officers, superintendents, social service officers and development officers to prepare the department’s 2026 implementation program using the brainstorming methodology.
The Chief Secretariat (w.p.) Planning Director Mrs. Nilmini, Budget Director N.A. Suminda and the Ministry of Health and Social Welfare (w.p.) Planning Director Mr. Madhava Prasad provided resources for the program.
