Propagation of the Local Food Project

The propagation of a local food culture in the Western Province is far more important as evident in the context of the current generation’s children, families engaged in occupations and elders in the Western Province getting accustomed to artificial food items in their large numbers. Evidence suggests that they are prone to more prevalent diseases such as cancer, diabetics and cholesterol owing to the consumption of these artificial food items. The medical opinion is that there is a diabetic patient per every 10 persons. Under this scenario, people in Sri Lanka would largely become victims of many a disease accompanied by more dangerous ones such as cancer in the years to come as a result of this trend of artificial food culture. The objective of this project as such is to drive the people towards the local food culture as was in Sri Lanka during the past.

Way the project gets going

    1. In Ayurvedic Hospitals
    2. In canteens of schools
    3. Creation of local food parlors in the Divisional Secretariats in future. In the implementation of this project, it is contemplated to set it in motion giving preference to single parents (Widows and Widowers), elders and low income families.

The first phase of this project involves the putting local food items for sale in the hospitals of the Department of Ayurveda and the canteens of schools and selling of local food items in food parlors having like items in the Divisional Secretariats.
